Celebrating the Natural and Built heritage of the Kings River with a special visit to Bolands Mill, Kells, Co Kilkenny. It is one of seven mills on the Kings River and a mill has existed here since the 11th century with the current operational until the 1980s. The milling mechanisms are still in situ and fascinating to see and hear about. We will explore the mill, mill race and the angling on the Kings River during the visit.
Ken Boland, whose family have owned the corn mill for a number of generations will guide through the mill and show the mechanisms which are still present and hearing about the precision of the engineering from the 1800s was fascinating.
Weirs were built on rivers during the development of mills to divert and control water to the mill wheels. fish migration and alter the natural process of the river. Nore Vision chairperson, Bob Wemyss will share with us the journey of the salmon and it’s migration route and also share the efforts of Nore Suir Rivers Trust in conserving salmon by making alternations to the weir to ensure fish can make the journey upstream to their spawning grounds.
