Natural Flood Management
We are no longer watching climate change from a far and have experienced severe weather events here over the past number of years. NRCT supports the use of nature based solutions to mitigate the challenges to our rivers and communities posed by climate change. Inspired by nature and working with the landscape, they can provide effective solutions to a range of problems including flooding, pollution and erosion. These solutions aim to improve, restore or mimic natural processes in order to reduce the risk of flooding by slowing the flow of flood waters and holding or storing water.
Working with the Inishowen Rivers Trust and the Flow Partnership UK we ran a number of workshops in Freshford, Co Kilkenny in 2022 on the use of Nature Based Solutions for flood management. Nore Vision – NRCT is now working with funding through Kilkenny Leader Partnership on the next stage of the project and hopes to complete a Natural Flood Management Feasibility Study in 2023.
Flood Risk management is co-ordinated by the Office of Public Works (OPW) and their website www.flooding.ie has useful information, maps and guidelines.
